Sun Tzu, Author of The Art of War, once said “If the mind is willing, the flesh could go on and on without many things.” This timeless quote rings as true today as it did when it was written, but under slightly different context here. _ Perception of injury is often the biggest hurdle an athlete may face in their recovery. Fear, anxiety, pain, confidence & a host of other physical, mental, & emotional states come into play. Many of these factors can be positively influenced by one important tactic. _ CONTROL. _ If you want the best possible rehab outcome, you need your athletes to feel as though they have control over their rehab destiny. _ In order to feel in control, they must be focussed and educated on the aspects of their recovery that fall within their control…which, in reality, is most of it. _ Therefore as clinicians, we have a choice. _ Promote and facilitate a learning, collaborative environment in which our athletes are an equal participant in the planning and execution of their rehab. _ Or, propagate a system based on fear mongering, in which the main message is how much they need us, so that we maximize the benefit to us, the clinician. _ Which one do you think will get the better result?
