Is it Monday again already? I feel stupidly exhausted - you know, when it feels like you can't string together a coherent thought? I need a holiday... . . I've had a few enquiries about these blooms from my last post; they are just common Echinacea purpurea, but I see how they can be mistaken for sunflowers. They are fast becoming one of my favourite blooms for August! What's been your favourite flower this month? . . #britishflowers #echinacea #flowerfarm #flowersfromthefarm #seasonalfloweralliance #underthefloralspell #seasonalflowers #august #buylocal #northnorfolk #norfolk #norfolkgrown #gatherandcurate #englishcountryflowers #askforprovenance

First Dahlia bloom 🧡

Many of you traveled long distance to be a part of the workshop. We appreciate you spending the afternoon at the farm and hope that you left the workshop with a deeper love for flowers and that you made an unforgettable memory! August is tough. There’s no way around it, it just is. Behind any beautiful harvest photo you see online right now there is a grower who is exhausted. . My friend Sas of @floraloraflowers calls it Slaugust. And I think I know why. We’ve all been slogging for months now. . We’ve been working 12-18h days, 7 says a week, since April. As growers and small business owners we haven’t had a single day of summer vacation, or anything even vaguely resembling a long weekend (although every weekend has FELT long). We’ve spent countless hours baking in the sun, planting through 30 degree days and harvesting well into the darkness of the evenings. We’ve been answering emails at midnight and getting up at 5am. We’ve stopped writing ‘to do’ lists because they’ve become too long to feel reasonable. And here’s where it gets hard: We are not even close to ‘done’. September is wildly busy on almost every farm, and it peaks in October at Thanksgiving. Then the ‘real work’ begins. We must clean up the entire farm, prepare it for the spring, AND plant countless spring bulbs. October is nothing but physical labor at a point in the season where you are not sure you can push any further. . Rest in November? Nope. Time to start harvesting evergreens and preparing for Christmas. Holiday markets, open houses and workshops. It begins to feel pretty easy to romanticize January. . So why do we do it? Everyone has their own answer. I do it because it matters. I do it because every step of the way I’m building something new and special in my community. I do it because in my own small way I’m changing customers buying habits, showing them that they can have the very best products LOCALLY. In their own community, not from halfway around the world. I do it because I have the privilege of doing something that creates joy. And marks moments. Something that makes memories. I do it because the hardest work often yields the best results. I do it because I love learning. I do it because I prefer dirty hands and dirty work boots. I do it because I’m going to leave something for people to remember me by.
